We are aware of and watching a potential Winter Storm that is forecast to arrive early in the morning. At this time, the area of impact is uncertain so we are unable to make an educated call at this time. However, it remains possible that we will have to make a quick pivot in the morning and want families to be prepared for the potential of an E-Learning Day. We will keep you posted as we know more.

Congratulations to Coach Vichita Ounchith for being a recipient of The Butch Nash Award!! 🏈The Butch Nash Award🏈 AWARD REQUIREMENTS: An active assistant football coach at the high school level. Although not strictly limited to varsity level coaches, the Executive Committee sets a requirement of being an assistant who is a “front liner” – in the limelight, under the gun, recipient of praise and/or criticism approaching the level of the head coach. Certainly, a few younger coaches can meet these requirements, BUT, in all candor, years of service to a program will influence the selection committee’s choices (generally 15 or more years). Both the head coach and the nominee must be members of the MHSFCA. No more than one assistant from a high school program will be honored in a given year. The award is limited to fifteen recipients in a given year.

Congratulations to JP Moes, a junior at Warroad High School, who was selected as the winner of the Minnesota Federation of Music Clubs Biennial Auditions for piano! JP prepared for this competition for over a year, selecting three pieces to play from memory: The Entertainer by Scott Joplin, Fantasia in D Minor by Mozart, and Wedding Day at Troldhaugen by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. JP was able to record his audition at Warroad RiverPlace with the help of theater technician, Aaron Trott. A student of Nancy Fisher, JP received his award letter and a check for $600 on March 17. Congratulations on this tremendous achievement! JP MOES John Peter (JP) Moes is a junior at Warroad High School. On JP’s eighth birthday he received his first keyboard after only partly mentioning his interest in learning music. Soon after he started lessons with a young student teacher in Wentzville, Missouri, where he lived at the time. He did beginner lessons for a year, learning the basics, until he moved to Manhattan, Kansas. While in Manhattan, he began taking lessons with an accomplished piano teacher with over three decades of teaching experience, Sibylle Kuder, with a focus on classical music. Mrs. Kuder’s priorities involved technical, musical, and performance skills. Under this teaching, JP learned how to be professional and instilled proper form and dedication to practice. After a year of learning classical, JP realized he had an interest in learning jazz. He was able to find a college attendant at Kansas State University, Lars Quincke, who offered instruction with jazz-oriented lessons. Mr. Quincke’s focus during lessons was chord and scale proficiency. JP was taught different ways of operating chord progressions and how to identify them, different modes of common scales, such as Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, and such, and soloing work. While jazz was the main attention in their lessons, they still worked on classical music. JP entered the Kansas MTNA competition when he was eleven years old. While he did not win, the experience was a great learning opportunity. When JP was in 7th grade, Mr. Quincke returned to his hometown in Germany, so the two started doing virtual lessons which continue today. In 2021, JP moved to Warroad Minnesota. Why Warroad? Well, hockey of course. However, he was relieved to find a prestigious piano teacher in the town of only 1,800 people. JP started lessons with Mrs. Nancy Fisher in eighth grade. Mrs. Fisher studied at Northwestern University and the University of North Dakota. Teaching in Warroad for over 30 years, and a Past-President of the Minnesota Federation of Music Clubs, she encouraged JP to study more complicated classical pieces while he studied jazz with Mr. Quincke. Mrs. Fisher was able to build and refine what JP had learned from his previous teachers and continued to bring out his full potential as a pianist. Mrs. Fisher entered JP in the National Federation of Junior Festivals. JP was selected to attend the 2023 Medora Music Camp in Medora, North Dakota, where he received direct training by Dr. Nariaki Sugiura, Associate Professor of Piano and Collaborative Piano at the University of North Dakota Music Department. Throughout his career, JP has mostly performed pieces by Beethoven, Chopin, and Mozart. After his success in his most recent competition, JP has started learning popular songs such as Chopin’s Nocturne in E-Flat Major and Debussy’s Clair De Lune. JP plans to continue studying music throughout his senior year in high school and in college. When JP is not learning new compilations of piano for competition and concerts, he may be found gigging jazz with his younger brother for local establishments for fundraisers or service hours. JP also plays saxophone in the Warroad High School band and piano for the jazz ensemble. He has also accompanied the Warroad High School choir under the direction of Mrs. Fisher. He was inducted into the Minnesota National Honor Society in his junior year. He stays active by playing on the Warroad High School hockey and track teams. He participates in trap and golf. Like the loyalty to piano, JP has achieved over 11 years as a Scout and is currently pursuing his Eagle Scout rank, with hopeful completion in September 2025. And last, but not least, JP is dedicated to his faith and serving his church. He is serving a three-year term on a steering committee chartered to find ways for adults to better accompany youth in their faith. Along with this program, he is joining thirty other individuals on a mission trip to Jamaica to build homes and provide food for those in need. JP is honored to be this year’s winner of the Minnesota Federation of Music Clubs Biennial Auditions.
